The air grew colder as the party approached the massive skull-shaped entrance carved into the mountainside. Its hollow eyes glared down at them, and the jagged teeth formed a foreboding archway. Scattered around the entrance were shattered weapons and dented armor, remnants of those who had come before. The grim sight was a reminder of the stakes.
“This is it,” [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] muttered, gripping his staff tightly. His golden scales shimmered faintly in the dim light.
[[Ellette|Ellette]] took a deep breath, her sharp eyes scanning the wreckage. “No turning back now. We’ve come too far.”
[[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] nodded, adjusting his cloak. “Stay together. The mountain will want to test us before we face him.”
[[Qwimby|Qwimby]] twirled his gun, a smirk on his face. “And when we do? I’ve got a bullet with Zargathax’s name on it.”
They stepped into the cavern, immediately struck by its beauty. The walls were encrusted with vibrant gemstones that glowed faintly, casting a kaleidoscope of colours across the cavern. A massive waterfall cascaded from above, its surface shimmering like liquid silver, the spray catching the light in mesmerizing patterns.
Small creatures moved within the cavern, crabs with gem-encrusted shells scuttled by, tiny spiders spun threads that glimmered like spun gold, and bats with crystalline wings flitted overhead. Even the rats scurrying in the shadows seemed to gleam, their fur speckled with sparkling minerals.
“Don’t let the beauty fool you,” [[Ellette|Ellette]] warned. “This place is his lair. It’s probably crawling with traps.”
The party moved cautiously, their footsteps echoing faintly. The enchanting sights gave way to a sense of unease as they approached the end of the cavern. There, at the heart of it all, stood Zargathax.
The necromancer was a figure of terror and majesty, cloaked in tattered black robes that billowed with unnatural wind. His skeletal hand rested on the massive crystal that imprisoned Princess Donnabella, her form suspended in the centre, her expression frozen in serene slumber. The crystal pulsed with a sickly light as Zargathax chanted, his voice echoing like the whispers of the dead. Tendrils of magic spiralled from the crystal into the necromancer, feeding his dark power.
[[Ellette|Ellette]]’s voice broke the silence. “Zargathax! Stop this!”
Zargathax turned slowly, his face a pale mask of death, his eyes burning with malevolent light. “Ah, the little heroes arrive at last,” he sneered. “You’re just in time to witness my ascension.”
The party spread out, weapons and spells at the ready.
“We won’t let you get away with this!” [[Ellette|Ellette]] shouted, stepping forward.
Zargathax chuckled, a hollow, chilling sound. “Do you even understand the scope of what I’m doing? These dragons you admire so much, they are a plague upon this world. I will wipe them out and ascend as a god to shape this realm as it should be.”
[[Qwimby|Qwimby]], moving silently, began to circle behind the necromancer. He raised his gun, aiming for the back of Zargathax’s head.
“I’ll give you one chance,” [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] said, his voice steady. “Surrender now, or face justice.”
Zargathax grinned wickedly. “Justice? Foolish mortal. I’ve lived countless lifetimes beyond your understanding. What makes you think you can stop me?”
Suddenly, Zargathax raised a hand and turned, his bony finger pointed directly at [[Qwimby|Qwimby]]. A burst of dark energy shot forth, striking the rogue in the chest. [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] flew backward, slamming into the wall with a groan of pain.
“[[Qwimby|Qwimby]]!” [[Ellette|Ellette]] cried, rushing toward him.
“I’m fine!” [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] coughed, though his face was pale. “He’s quicker than he looks…”
“You should have stayed in your graves!” Zargathax bellowed, his voice reverberating throughout the cavern. With a wave of his hand, the crystal’s light grew brighter, and shadowy figures began to emerge from the walls spectral warriors, their hollow eyes glowing with malice.
“Positions!” [[Ellette|Ellette]] barked. “This is it, everyone! We bring him down!”
The battle had begun. Zargathax’s laughter echoed through the chamber as the party charged forward, ready to face their greatest challenge yet.
