The party approached the towering structure that loomed before them. Its surface was smooth and seamless, devoid of any visible entrance. The air around it hummed faintly, adding an eerie tension to the atmosphere.
“No door,” [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] muttered, tilting his head. “Great. Any ideas?”
[[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] stepped forward confidently, vines weaving around his arm. “I’ll get us up there.” Using his _Spider Climb_ ability, he scaled the tower’s smooth exterior, a rope coiled around his shoulder. The climb was going well until a metallic click echoed through the air. [[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] barely had time to react before a hidden spike shot out, stabbing him in the side. With a yelp, he lost his grip and plummeted.
He landed with a heavy thud on [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]], who groaned under the sudden weight.
“Thanks for catching me,” [[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] wheezed, clutching his side.
[[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] scowled. “I didn’t catch you, you fool. You fell on me.”
The tower emitted a deep grinding sound, its entire structure beginning to spin. Panels shifted and reset, erasing any trace of the trap that had been triggered.
“What in the...” [[Zara Blackwood|Zara]] murmured, watching the mechanical marvel twist and realign itself.
[[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] groaned and summoned vines, their tendrils reaching up the tower’s height. As the vines latched onto the surface, a jet of flame erupted from hidden nozzles, incinerating them instantly.
“Are you kidding me?” [[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] exclaimed, throwing up his hands.
[[Ellette|Ellette]] crossed her arms, her gaze scanning the spinning structure. “It’s mechanical. Except for the flames. There’s magic involved.”
[[Zara Blackwood|Zara]] unslung her lute, strumming a few experimental chords. The tower emitted a faint hum, almost in response. She raised an eyebrow and played a matching melody. The hum grew louder, and with a metallic creak, a door materialized in the tower’s base.
“How did you know that would work?” [[Ellette|Ellette]] asked, surprised.
[[Zara Blackwood|Zara]] shrugged. “I didn’t. The tower made odd hums when it spun, so I played them back.”
The party exchanged glances before stepping cautiously through the newly formed entrance.
The interior of the tower was just as curious as its exterior. A spiral staircase wound its way upward, the steps creaking faintly underfoot. The walls were adorned with faint engravings, and the air smelled faintly of aged parchment and oil.
The party ascended, eventually reaching a study room at the top. A large window allowed moonlight to spill into the space, illuminating a desk, bookshelves, and a wall-mounted board covered with sketches and notes.
“This must be Von Richton’s study,” [[Ellette|Ellette]] said, stepping cautiously inside.
The drawings on the board depicted detailed studies of werewolves and vampires. Anatomy diagrams, lists of weaknesses, and tactical strategies were scrawled in a meticulous hand. Among the notes were repeated mentions of silver and wolfsbane as key weapons against both creatures.
“He knew his stuff,” [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] remarked, scanning the room.
[[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]]’s eyes gleamed as he poured over the bookshelves, stuffing tomes and scrolls into his bag with reckless abandon.
“Careful,” [[Ellette|Ellette]] warned. “We don’t know what’s cursed.”
“Knowledge is never a curse,” [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] retorted, continuing his hoarding.
On a workbench sat a heavily mechanical crossbow, its design intricate and intimidating. [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] inspected it, his fingers tracing its metal frame.
““This could come in handy,” he said, about to take it. [[Ellette|Ellette]]’s voice cut through sharply. “No, leave it. We don’t need to risk it.”
[[Zara Blackwood|Zara]] found a small tin with an eagle insignia, its contents labeled as a potent silver powder. Nearby, a pouch of dried wolfsbane was tucked among the notes. She pocketed both with a thoughtful nod.
Among the scattered items, a walking cane with an eagle-shaped head rested against the bookshelf, its craftsmanship impeccable. Despite its allure, the party left it untouched. Despite their thorough search, there was no mention of Victor Von Richton’s whereabouts. Disappointed but not deterred, the party decided to leave.
Using vines once more, the party created a makeshift descent out the window. They climbed down carefully, avoiding any traps or mechanisms. As they reached the ground and moved a safe distance away, the tower shimmered and turned invisible, vanishing from sight.
“So it’s not just mechanical,” [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] muttered. “It’s protected by some serious magic.”
“We’ll come back if we need to,” [[Ellette|Ellette]] said, leading the group forward.
The landscape shifted as they travelled. The air grew heavier, the ground wetter, and the scent of decay filled their nostrils. Before them lay a wide expanse of murky water and twisted trees.
“I guess this is it,” [[Zara Blackwood|Zara]] said, her voice tinged with unease.
[[Ellette|Ellette]] drew her blade, her expression grim. “Stay close. We don’t know what’s waiting for us in there.”
The party ventured cautiously into the swamp, their senses heightened as they prepared for whatever horrors lay ahead.
