The party travelled north along the rugged path, the air growing colder with each step. In the distance, the jagged silhouette of Castle Ravenloft loomed, its spires piercing the misty sky. The sight sent a chill through the group, and even the usually stoic Ireena seemed uneasy.
“This is the closest I’ve ever been to it,” she said, her voice low. “If I get any closer, it will only be to strike Strahd down.”
The party nodded in agreement, their resolve hardening. As they pressed on, the crunch of gravel beneath their boots was interrupted by the sound of a carriage approaching.
The carriage came to a halt in front of them, its door swinging open. From within stepped Nord, his familiar top hat tilted jauntily as he offered a sweeping bow.
“Hello, dear sirs and madams,” he greeted, his tone as theatrical as ever.
The party stared, half in disbelief. “Where have you been?” [[Ellette|Ellette]] asked, her tone sharp.
“And how did you survive?” added [[Qwimby|Qwimby]], his hand hovering near his weapon.
Nord grinned. “Ah, well, it’s a tale for another time. Suffice it to say, I am quite resourceful. More importantly, I have come across some intriguing information—a legendary suit of armor hidden within the Amber Temple! I’ve been spreading the word to any adventurer brave enough to seek it.”
“What’s so special about this armor?” [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] asked, crossing his arms.
“They say it’s a gift of the gods,” Nord replied. “A suit imbued with the power to resist even the mightiest of curses. But beware—the temple is rife with werewolves and evil spirits.”
He handed them a map, its faded ink marking the temple’s location. “Good luck, my friends,” Nord said, tipping his hat as he climbed back into the carriage. The vehicle trundled away, disappearing into the fog.
The party gathered to discuss their next move. Ireena looked at the map and then at the distant mountains.
“The temple is closer,” she said. “If this armor exists, it could be invaluable in fighting Strahd.”
“Agreed,” [[Ellette|Ellette]] said. “We’ll head south.”
The group set off, the chill in the air growing sharper as they descended toward the southern path. [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]], trailing behind, suddenly stopped. He heard faint footsteps carried on the wind, and his senses prickled with the presence of dark magic. His gaze shifted to [[Ellette|Ellette]]’s bag.
“The journal,” [[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] muttered, approaching her. “It’s the source of power. Let me take it.”
[[Ellette|Ellette]] turned, her expression cold. “Fuck off,” she snapped, not breaking stride.
[[Morgar Goldgard|Morgar]] scowled but said nothing further, following begrudgingly.
The path wound steeply upward, leading to a narrow stairway carved into the rock. At its base stood an imposing gateway flanked by two skull-lit torches, their eerie glow cutting through the swirling mist. A goat with shaggy fur and piercing eyes blocked the path.
[[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] stepped forward, crouching to speak. “Greetings, friend. What brings you here?”
The goat turned its head and responded in a deep, resonant voice. “I speak Common Tongue, fool. This is the gateway to the Amber Temple. Beware the flying beast that controls the skies, for it is a foe to all.”
[[Karrut Styk|Karrut]] gasped, his eyes lighting up. “A new friend!” he exclaimed, bolting through the gateway. The rest of the party groaned and quickly followed.
The path beyond was steep and treacherous, but it eventually opened onto a ledge overlooking a vast expanse. At the end of the path stood the Amber Temple, its exterior carved directly into the mountainside. Unlike the surrounding landscape, there was no snow or wind around the temple, as if an invisible barrier protected it.
“Why isn’t it freezing here?” [[Qwimby|Qwimby]] asked, throwing a small stone toward the entrance. It landed harmlessly at the door.
“Just checking,” he added.
The party approached cautiously, their steps echoing against the stone. The entrance was dark but faintly illuminated by an amber glow emanating from within.
“This is it,” Ireena said, her voice a mix of awe and dread.
Weapons at the ready, the party stepped inside, leaving the cold and mist behind as they ventured into the enigmatic depths of the Amber Temple.
