Rakau Nui was a sea elf guide from the Moonshae Isles and a devoted follower of Chauntea. During the events surrounding Kazgorath's blight, he assisted Sordia Vignti by guiding them through the Moonshae Isles and helping them navigate the region as they sought to stop the spreading corruption.
Throughout the journey, Rakau remained a faithful servant of Chauntea and believed the party's actions were in service to her ideals. He witnessed the destruction caused by Kazgorath and accompanied the party until the final confrontation.
During his travels with Sordia Vignti. While he initially respected Karrut as a druid dedicated to protecting nature, prolonged exposure to him left Rakau increasingly conflicted. He witnessed Karrut behave in ways that Rakau considered inappropriate for someone connected to the divine. Karrut was frequently irreverent toward religious customs, was known to become intoxicated, and showed little concern for many of the traditions and sacred practices that Rakau had spent his life upholding. On several occasions, Rakau believed Karrut had shown disrespect toward places and sites that were considered sacred to Chauntea and her followers.
At the time, Rakau viewed these incidents as flaws in an otherwise well-meaning individual. However, During the battle against Kazgorath, Karrut's true nature was revealed as Chauntea incarnate. Upon defeating Kazgorath and purifying the blight, Karrut fully awakened to his divine identity and ascended as Chauntea reborn.
The revelation had a profound effect on Rakau Nui. His entire faith had been built around devotion to Chauntea, and learning that the goddess he worshipped had been travelling beside him in the form of Karrut caused him to question everything he believed. The memories of Karrut's actions during their journey only deepened this crisis. Rakau could not reconcile the image of the goddess he had worshipped with the individual he had travelled alongside. In his eyes, Karrut lacked the dignity, wisdom, reverence, and conduct that Rakau believed should define a deity. Rakau renounced his faith and abandoned the teachings of Chauntea.
In the years that followed, Rakau's resentment grew. He blamed both Karrut and Sordia Vignti for the collapse of his beliefs and the loss of the purpose that had guided his life. During this period he came into contact with Talona, the goddess of disease, poison, and decay.
Talona offered Rakau a new purpose. In exchange for his service, she granted him power and the means to pursue those he held responsible for his downfall.
Talona claimed
"Growth without decay is stagnation. Life without death is imbalance. True renewal is born from plague, rot, and the cleansing touch of pestilence."
Rakau came to view her as a deity whose nature was at least honest and consistent.
Rakau Nui now serves Talona and actively seeks out Sordia Vignti. He blames the party for the loss of his faith and views them as the cause of his downfall. Since entering Talona's service, he has gained powers associated with disease, decay, and blight, which he uses in pursuit of both Talona's goals and his own vendetta. His goal is simple, locate Sordia Vignti and kill those he believes are responsible for destroying the life he once knew.
