## I. Origins & Mythic History
Dark Speech predates the recognised cosmology.
It is not Abyssal, and it is not Deep Speech.
The oldest planar condemnations, preserved in fractured Celestial reliquaries and pre-draconic ruin-slabs, refer to Dark Speech only as **“the Unuttered”** — a set of sounds and structures that did not arise from any plane, but accompanied the first recorded **breaches of ordered reality**.
Where Abyssal emerged alongside demons and Deep Speech with the Far Realm, Dark Speech appears only in records describing **the failure of early ontological frameworks** — moments when reality briefly lost its capacity to consistently define what a thing was.
Dark Speech is therefore not associated with a realm.
It is associated with **cosmic error**.
Many theologians believe Dark Speech is not a language in itself, but the **residual grammar of a universe that did not stabilise**.
---
## II. Historical Manifestations
Dark Speech has never had a culture of native speakers.
Every recorded instance of its appearance is tied to:
- pre-planar artefacts
- extinct god-forms
- entropy cults
- failed creation engines
- or post-apocalyptic strata where reality shows signs of having been **rewritten and abandoned**
Fragments surface irregularly throughout history, often independently, and always without continuity.
There are no dialects.
There are only **contaminations**.
Attempts to compile Dark Speech lexicons have repeatedly failed, as fragments exhibit no stable internal reference and frequently recontextualise adjacent symbols or sounds.
---
## III. Nature of the Tongue
Dark Speech is **ontologically profane**.
It does not seek to persuade, command, or express.
It asserts statements that **invalidate categories**.
Rather than “fire”, it produces utterances equivalent to:
- “that which burns is not distinct from that which is burned”
- “cause and effect are not obligated to agree”
- “identity is an imposition, not a condition”
Dark Speech excels at articulating:
- paradox made operative
- boundary collapse
- contradiction as structure
- and conceptual violence
It is incapable of expressing:
- continuity
- narrative
- ethical distinction
- or stable reference
In Dark Speech, nouns fail.
Only **violations** persist.
---
## IV. Script & Recorded Forms
There is no preserved Dark Speech script.
What archivists catalogue are **recording artefacts** — symbolic after-images produced when reality attempts to stabilise around Dark Speech events.
These appear as:
- overlapping sigil fields
- impossible marginalia
- glyphs that erase each other
- self-contradictory diagrams
- text that alters the grammar of the page
Some Dark Speech records become legible only after being partially destroyed.
Others become illegible once preserved.
The Alexandrian vault classifies Dark Speech materials as **semantic hazards**, not texts.
---
## V. Cultural Weight
Dark Speech has no culture.
It has only **incidents**.
Those who encounter it are never “speakers”.
They are:
- witnesses
- carriers
- or survivors
Across all documented cases, individuals exposed to Dark Speech display:
- conceptual fixation
- collapse of categorical thinking
- difficulty with proper names
- aversion to symbolic systems
- or spontaneous development of personal ideographic shorthand
In many traditions, even naming Dark Speech aloud is considered an act of **minor profanation**.
---
## VI. Magic & Metaphysics
Dark Speech does not shape magic.
It **invalidates magical premises**.
Spells incorporating Dark Speech fragments rarely misfire. They instead:
- reinterpret their own effects
- destabilise targeting logic
- dissolve ward definitions
- or cause spell schools to cross-express
Dark Speech is therefore not used in spellcasting.
It is used in **ontological sabotage**.
Several ancient ruins show evidence of magical infrastructures that did not collapse, but were instead **re-described until they no longer functioned as magic at all**.
Translation magic cannot safely operate on Dark Speech. The spell returns impressions such as:
- “category failure”
- “prohibited structure”
- “non-agreement event”
---
## VII. Attested Impressions
Dark Speech is recorded as **conceptual effects**, not phrases.
**“Names cannot remain.”**
Effect: Proper nouns lose referential stability.
Recorded in: the Shattered Ossuary Tablets.
---
**“The outside has no edge.”**
Effect: Containment wards redefine interior/exterior relations.
Recorded in: pre-cataclysmic summoning vaults.
---
**“What observes is observed.”**
Effect: Scrying matrices collapse into recursive perception.
Recorded in: null-temple mirrors.
---
**“Absence persists.”**
Effect: Destruction effects leave active conceptual residues.
Recorded in: annihilation engine ruins.
---
## VIII. Archivist’s Marginalia
> “Abyssal seeks to ruin.
>
> Deep Speech seeks to replace.
>
> Dark Speech does not seek.
>
> It states that seeking was never a coherent activity.”
---
## Alexandrian Classification Note
Dark Speech is recorded among the **Profane Tongues** — systems not of communication, but of **cosmic violation**.
