## I. Origins & Mythic History
Gnomish tradition holds that their language began not with stories or oaths, but with **questions**.
The earliest gnome records describe proto-gnomes living among burrows, ruins, and abandoned workings of older peoples. These environments were rich with mechanisms whose purposes were forgotten. Survival demanded experimentation. Experimentation demanded notation.
Early Gnomish thus emerged as a hybrid of borrowed scripts—primarily Dethek, with Elvish flourishes and Common shorthand—retooled into a language optimised for **recording observation, process, and anomaly**.
Gnomish did not arise to preserve the past.
It arose to **interrogate it**.
---
## II. Historical Evolution
Gnomish evolves faster than Dwarvish and slower than Common.
Its grammar remains largely stable, but its vocabulary expands relentlessly. New terms are coined daily in gnome communities to describe:
- novel mechanisms
- unexpected reactions
- magical irregularities
- and theoretical constructs
Entire dictionaries of obsolete Gnomish exist containing words for inventions that worked only once.
The language also displays an unusual phenomenon: failed experiments often leave linguistic traces. Phrases denoting impossibilities, paradoxes, or unstable effects proliferate far beyond their practical relevance.
In Gnomish, even error becomes **terminology**.
---
## III. Nature of the Tongue
Gnomish is **precise and recursive**.
Sentences frequently contain nested clauses, conditional branches, and clarifying parentheticals. Spoken Gnomish often sounds like multiple conversations occurring in sequence.
Gnomish excels at expressing:
- process
- measurement
- modification
- causality
- probability
It is notably poor at expressing:
- solemnity
- reverence
- finality
- or unquestioned tradition
In Gnomish, everything is provisional.
---
## IV. Script & Written Forms
Gnomish uses a heavily modified form of Dethek.
Where Dwarvish Dethek is monumental, Gnomish Dethek is **annotative**.
Additional strokes denote:
- units of measure
- degree of certainty
- experimental status
- and authorial confidence
Gnomish texts are rarely linear. They are filled with:
- marginalia
- arrows
- overlays
- retractions
- and alternative formulations
A complete Gnomish manuscript often resembles a conversation with itself.
---
## V. Cultural Weight
Among gnomes, fluency in Gnomish implies not education, but **participation**.
To speak Gnomish well is to demonstrate:
- curiosity
- willingness to revise
- comfort with error
- and delight in complexity
Formal speech exists, but is generally reserved for safety warnings, ethical covenants, and funeral records.
It is considered culturally improper to deliver absolute proclamations in Gnomish. Even statements of grief are often phrased as **reflections** rather than declarations.
---
## VI. Magic & Metaphysics
Gnomish interfaces with magic through **analysis**.
It is ill-suited to large-scale ritual invocation, but exceptionally powerful in:
- enchantment refinement
- alchemical notation
- artificer schematics
- and arcane diagnostics
Many modern magical formulae are first **tested** in Gnomish, then stabilised in Draconic or bound in Infernal.
Translation magic performs well on Gnomish lexically, but struggles with its **conditional density**. Most translated Gnomish sounds overly simple, as if half the sentence were missing.
Often, it is.

## VII. Attested Examples
**“Measure twice, sing once.”**
Literal: Verify before execution.
Meaning: Test before activation.
Usage: Craft instruction, laboratory humour.
---
**“If it worked, write it down.”**
Literal: Successful outcomes require documentation.
Meaning: Knowledge is communal.
Usage: Workshop motto, apprenticeship instruction.
---
**“The anomaly persists.”**
Literal: Unexpected behaviour continues.
Meaning: Further observation required.
Usage: Research notes, magical incident reports.
---
**“Provisional success.”**
Literal: Temporarily stable outcome.
Meaning: Celebrate cautiously.
Usage: Invention tests, enchantment trials.
---
## VIII. Archivist’s Marginalia
> “The danger of Gnomish texts is not that they explode.
>
> It is that they invite you to keep reading long after you should have stopped touching things.”
---
## Alexandrian Classification Note
Gnomish is recorded among the **Investigative Tongues** — languages whose primary metaphysical function is **inquiry**.
