_The Tongue of Law, Clause, and Binding_

> “Infernal is not a language of evil.
> It is a language of **enforcement**.”

## I. Origins & Mythic History
Infernal was not born.
It was **engineered**.
The oldest surviving planar records describe the early Hells not as realms of fire and torment, but as domains of **perfect hierarchy** — systems constructed to impose order upon entities and concepts too volatile to stabilise themselves.
Infernal arose within this project.
Where Draconic names reality and Celestial witnesses it, Infernal was devised to **bind it**.
Ancient infernal codices describe the language’s earliest purpose not as communication, but as **containment**: to define obligation, consequence, ownership, and default in a way that even primordial beings could not evade.
Thus Infernal did not begin as speech.
It began as **contract**.
---
## II. Historical Evolution
Infernal is among the least changed tongues in existence.
This is not because it resists drift naturally, but because **deviation is illegal**.
Every alteration to Infernal across its history is meticulously recorded, cross-indexed, and sanctioned by infernal authorities whose existence predates many mortal pantheons. Unsanctioned mutation is treated not as linguistic error, but as **metaphysical sabotage**.
As devils expanded their influence across planes, Infernal spread with them, acquiring specialist registers:
- **High Infernal**, used in arch-contracts and soul compacts
- **Bureaucratic Infernal**, used in infernal administration
- **Ritual Infernal**, adapted for mortal summoning and binding rites
Each remains fully interoperable, though only High Infernal retains full binding potency.
---
## III. Nature of the Tongue
Infernal is **definitional**.
Every substantive term is accompanied, implicitly or explicitly, by its own limits. Nouns carry conditions. Verbs carry liability. Even conjunctions imply precedence.
Infernal excels at expressing:
- obligation
- ownership
- consequence
- jurisdiction
- loophole
- and default
It is notably poor at expressing:
- ambiguity
- metaphor
- emotional spontaneity
- or forgiveness
In Infernal, there is no true word for “mistake.”
There is only **breach**.
---
## IV. Script & Written Forms
Infernal script is angular, barbed, and internally referential.
Glyphs are constructed from modular elements that encode:
- category
- authority
- condition
- and exception
A single Infernal clause often occupies an entire circle of text, with dependent glyphs branching like legal annotations around a central assertion.
Infernal texts favour durable, auditable media:
- hell-forged brass
- treated vellum
- blood-reactive inks
- infernal crystal
- and magically indexed ledgers
Forgery is rare not because it is impossible, but because **falsehood in Infernal is mechanically detectable**. Incorrect glyph relationships destabilise, fracture, or burn.
---
## V. Cultural Weight
Among devils, Infernal is not merely spoken.
It is **reality’s interface**.
Rank, authority, and entitlement are encoded linguistically. A devil’s speech patterns reveal its place in infernal hierarchy as surely as heraldry.
Among mortals, fluency in Infernal implies:
- infernal scholarship
- warlock pacts
- judicial demonology
- or survival after contractual entanglement
In many cultures, the public use of Infernal is legally restricted. In some, it is punishable. In most, it is watched.
---
## VI. Magic & Metaphysics
Infernal is uniquely potent in binding magic.
Circles inscribed in Infernal do not merely restrain entities. They establish **terms**. Wards phrased in Infernal do not block effects. They define **violation**.
This is why devil bargains remain enforceable across planar boundaries. They are not promises.
They are **structures**.
Translation magic renders Infernal meaning accurately, but dangerously. The words translate. The **embedded liabilities do not**. Many a summoner has understood an Infernal clause perfectly and still forfeited something they did not realise they had offered.
---
## VII. Attested Examples
**“Terms acknowledged.”**
Literal: Conditions accepted.
Meaning: Binding agreement entered.
Usage: Contract seals, pact confirmations.
---
**“Consideration received.”**
Literal: Payment registered.
Meaning: Obligation now active.
Usage: Soul compacts, infernal transactions.
---
**“Default shall be collected.”**
Literal: Failure triggers enforcement.
Meaning: Threat of contractual consequence.
Usage: Warnings, punitive invocations.
---
**“Jurisdiction invoked.”**
Literal: Authority established.
Meaning: A being or space now falls under infernal terms.
Usage: Summoning rites, planar claims.
---
## VIII. Archivist’s Marginalia
> “Students often ask how devils deceive if Infernal forbids falsehood.
>
> The answer is simple.
>
> Infernal does not prevent lies.
>
> It prevents **uncosted ones**.”
---
## Alexandrian Classification Note
Infernal is recorded among the **Binding Tongues** — languages whose primary metaphysical function is not expression, but **enforcement**.
