_The Tongue of Elemental Becoming_ _Compiled by Archivist Meriel of the Alexandrian Guild of Lorekeepers_ > “Primordial is not about what the world is. > It is about what the world is **doing**.” --- ## I. Origins & Mythic History Primordial predates nearly all mortal speech. The oldest planar accounts describe it not as a language developed by creatures, but as a **residue of creation** — a structured echo left behind when the raw forces of existence first began to interact. Before there were nations, gods, or even stable worlds, there were **movements**: collision, expansion, pressure, ignition, erosion, flow. Primordial emerged as the first system capable of **describing change while change was still happening**. Elementals did not invent Primordial. They are **shaped by it**. Thus Primordial did not begin as a language of naming. It began as a language of **process**. --- ## II. Historical Evolution Primordial has not meaningfully evolved. Instead, it has **differentiated**. As elemental forces stabilised into recognisable forms, Primordial expressed itself through four dominant dialect continua, each aligned to a primary manifestation of matter and energy: - **Aquan** — water, pressure, depth, dissolution - **Auran** — air, motion, resonance, dispersal - **Ignan** — fire, transformation, release, consumption - **Terran** — earth, structure, endurance, accumulation These are not separate languages. They are **modal expressions** of a shared grammar. Speakers fluent in one can often infer the others, though with difficulty. Elementals themselves frequently shift dialect mid-expression as their state changes. --- ## III. Nature of the Tongue Primordial is **verbal motion**. Its grammar is verb-dominant. States are temporary. Nouns are treated as events slowed enough to be referenced. Primordial excels at expressing: - transformation - momentum - interaction - emergence - and inevitability It is notably poor at expressing: - fixed identity - static ownership - moral judgement - or long-term abstraction In Primordial, nothing “is”. Everything **becomes**. --- ## IV. Script & Written Forms — Barazhad Primordial is most often recorded in **Barazhad**, a heavy, rune-like script designed to be carved, etched, or burned. Barazhad glyphs encode: - force - direction - intensity - and persistence Unlike Draconic Iokharic, Barazhad does not classify what something is. It records **how it moves, spreads, erodes, condenses, or consumes**. Because of this, Primordial inscriptions often function as **diagrams** as much as texts. A fluent reader can determine not only meaning, but predicted behaviour. --- ## V. Cultural Weight Among elementals and genasi, Primordial is not a heritage tongue. It is a **native condition**. Young elementals do not “learn” Primordial. They are gradually recognised as capable of **stabilising it**. Among mortals, knowledge of Primordial most often appears among: - elementalists - storm-callers - geomancers - planar scholars - and genasi communities To speak Primordial fluently is often to think in terms of **systems rather than selves**. --- ## VI. Magic & Metaphysics Primordial interfaces with magic through **alignment**. Spells phrased in Primordial do not impose form. They specify **behaviour**. Fire shaped through Ignan does not merely burn. It spreads, climbs, feeds, retreats, or starves according to the phrasing used. This is why many elemental summoning rites prefer Primordial. The language does not command elementals. It describes **what kind of change is occurring**. Translation magic renders Primordial accurately, but strips it of its **kinetic intuition**. The meaning transfers. The sense of inevitability does not. --- ## VII. Attested Examples **Primordial (general): “As the world turns.”** Literal: Change proceeds. Meaning: This outcome is natural and unavoidable. Usage: Elemental doctrine, geomantic inscriptions. --- **Aquan: “Depth keeps its own.”** Literal: Pressure preserves secrets. Meaning: What sinks is not easily retrieved. Usage: Oceanic warnings, planar trenches. --- **Auran: “All things travel.”** Literal: Nothing is still. Meaning: Movement is inherent. Usage: Wind rites, messenger invocations. --- **Ignan: “Feed the flame.”** Literal: Sustain transformation. Meaning: Escalate, intensify, or destroy. Usage: Fire cults, forge-rites, war magic. --- **Terran: “Hold. Endure. Remain.”** Literal: Resist change. Meaning: Stability is victory. Usage: Ward-stones, defensive circles, ancestral sites. --- ## VIII. Archivist’s Marginalia > “Draconic asks what a thing is. > > Primordial asks what it is becoming. > > Between them lies nearly all of magic.” --- ## Alexandrian Classification Note Primordial is recorded among the **Process Tongues** — languages whose primary metaphysical function is the articulation of **change itself**. ---
