### **Encounter: The Ravager's Lair**
---
**Setting:**
Deep within a desolate wasteland, the party enters a territory marked by jagged crystal shards, deep scars in the earth, and strange tremors beneath their feet. Unknown to them, this is the hunting ground of the **Bulette Ravager**, an apex predator that has absorbed magic from the land itself.

- Crystals can be destroyed (AC 17, 20 HP) with a DC 20 Strength check.
- **Burrowing Tunnels:**
- The Ravager uses these to emerge unpredictably. Creatures standing over tunnels must make a DC 15 Dexterity save when it emerges or fall prone.
- **Rubble Fields (Difficult Terrain):**
- Movement is halved in these areas.
---
### **The Fight**
#### **Phase 1: The Ambush**
The party feels tremors beneath their feet before the **Bulette Ravager** bursts out of the ground with a **Tectonic Leap**, aiming to catch multiple targets in its AoE. It stays near the **anti-magic zones** to weaken spellcasters, using **Arcane Feedback** when it senses spells being cast.
#### **Phase 2: The Hunt**
At half health, the Bulette Ravager retreats underground and begins using **Burrowing Ambush** to target isolated party members. It emerges near anti-magic zones and uses **Unstoppable Charge** to scatter the group.
#### **Phase 3: Desperation**
At 25% health, the Ravager becomes reckless, activating **Earthquake Aura** to destabilize the battlefield. It focuses on the most dangerous enemies, using its **Legendary Actions** to claw, disrupt concentration, or retreat as needed.
---
### **Encounter Objectives**
- **Primary:** Defeat the Bulette Ravager.
- **Secondary (Optional):** Destroy the arcane crystals to neutralize the anti-magic zones and gain an advantage.
---
### **Tactical Considerations**
- **Spellcasters:** Will need to coordinate to avoid the **anti-magic zones** and position themselves safely.
- **Melee Fighters:** Must handle the **Bulette Ravager's** high mobility and manage its knockback effects.
- **Resource Management:** The encounter's duration and the **Ravager's resilience** will test healing and spell slots.

### **Traits**
**Crest Armor (Breakable).**
The Bulette Ravager's tough crest armor renders it immune to all physical damage (bludgeoning, slashing, piercing) until the armor is destroyed.
- **Breaking the Armor:** The armor has **40 hit points** and is treated as an object with AC 24. Damage dealt to the armor does not carry over to the Bulette Ravager’s HP.
- **Effect After Breaking:** Once the armor is broken, the Bulette Ravager loses its immunity to physical damage but gains **Berserk Fury** (see below).
**Magic Resistance.** The bulette has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
**Resilient Hide.** The bulette is resistant to damage from spells and magical effects.
**Arcane Feedback (Recharge 5–6).** When the bulette is the target of a spell or magical effect, it can use its reaction to release a pulse of arcane energy. Creatures within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 3d8 force damage and be pushed 10 feet back. On a success, they take half damage and are not pushed.
---
### **Berserk Fury**
When the Bulette Ravager’s armor is broken, it enters a berserk rage. Until the end of combat, it gains the following effects:
- **Damage Increase:** All its attacks deal an additional 1d6 damage.
- **Speed Increase:** Its burrow speed increases to 50 feet.
- **Reckless Assault:** The bulette can reroll one damage die on each of its attacks (it must use the new roll).
---
### **Actions**
**Multiattack.** The bulette makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
- **Bite.** Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
**Hit:** 4d10 + 6 piercing damage.
- **Claw.** Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
**Hit:** 3d8 + 6 slashing damage.
**Tectonic Leap (Recharge 5–6).** The bulette jumps up to 50 feet in a straight line and slams into the ground.
- **Effect:** Each creature within 15 feet of the landing point must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 5d10 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. On a success, a creature takes half damage and is not knocked prone.
**Earthquake Aura (Recharge 6).** The bulette stomps, creating tremors in a 30-ft. radius.
- **Effect:** Each creature in the area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 3d10 bludgeoning damage and falls prone. Structures and objects in the area may also be damaged or collapse (DM discretion).
---
### **Legendary Actions**
The Bulette Ravager can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
1. **Burrow (1 Action):** The bulette burrows 20 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
2. **Claw Swipe (1 Action):** The bulette makes one claw attack.
3. **Counter Surge (2 Actions):** The bulette releases a surge of energy that disrupts concentration. All creatures concentrating on spells within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration.
---
### **Adjustments to CR**
The **40 HP Crest Armor**, paired with **Magic Resistance** and high AoE damage potential, makes this creature a formidable CR 12. The scaling effects of **Berserk Fury** after breaking the armor ensure that the encounter remains challenging, while its reduced HP pool and two Legendary Actions keep it balanced for a level 12 party.
