#### What This Rule Is For
Items can be:
- Damaged
- Broken
- Destroyed
But this **does not happen casually**.
This rule exists to:
- Make the world feel real
- Give weight to extreme situations
- Support dramatic moments
Not to punish players.
#### The Core Rule (Read This First)
> **Items are not damaged unless the situation clearly threatens them.**
Normal combat does **not** damage equipment.
#### When Items Are Safe
Your equipment is safe when:
- You take normal weapon damage
- You are hit by most spells
- You fall unconscious
- You fail saving throws
Note: HP loss does **not** imply item damage.
#### When Items Can Be Damaged
Items may take damage if:
- Specifically targeted
- Caught in powerful area effects
- Exposed to extreme forces
- The narrative clearly justifies it
Examples:
- Fireball detonating inside a backpack
- Acid submerging gear for extended time
- A dragon biting a shield
- A rust monster attack
#### Targeting an Item (Optional Rule)
A creature may try to damage an item by:
- Declaring the item as the target
- Making an attack roll with **Disadvantage**
- Beating the item’s AC
This is risky and intentional.
#### Item Armour Class & Hit Points
Use these **simple defaults**:
##### Item AC
|Material|AC|
|---|---|
|Cloth / Leather|11|
|Wood|13|
|Stone / Bone|15|
|Iron / Steel|19|
|Adamantine|23|
##### Item Hit Points (Guideline)
|Size|HP|
|---|---|
|Small|5–10|
|Medium|10–20|
|Large|20–40|
Note: Magic items have **resistance to damage** unless stated otherwise.
#### Magic Items & Destruction
Magic items:
- Are much harder to damage
- Often resist or ignore damage
- May require specific conditions to destroy
Examples:
- Legendary weapon shattered only in lava
- Cursed ring that reforms
- Artefact immune to mundane harm
Note: If a magic item can be destroyed, the DM will make it clear.
| Damaged | Broken | Destroyed |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| - Cosmetic or minor penalty<br>- Reduced effectiveness<br>- Repairable | - Item doesn’t function properly<br>- Requires repair or magic | - Item is gone<br>- Only powerful magic can restore it |
#### Repairing Items
- **Mundane items** can be repaired with tools and time
- **Magic items** usually require magic, specialists, or quests
- Temporary repairs may restore partial function
#### DM Rule of Thumb
> **If destroying an item would feel unfair, don’t do it.
> If it would feel dramatic and earned, consider it.**
#### Summary
> **Your gear is safe unless something extreme threatens it.**
