#### What Is Attunement?
Some magic items are **too powerful** to use casually.
To gain their full benefits, a character must **attune** to them — forming a magical bond.
#### The Core Rule (Read This First)
> **You can only be attuned to three magic items at a time.**
No matter how many magic items you own, only three can be fully active (per DM's Discretion).
---
#### Which Items Need Attunement?
An item requires attunement if:
- Its description says **“requires attunement”**
Common examples:
- Powerful weapons
- Protective gear
- Utility items with ongoing effects
Note: Simple items (like most potions) do **not** require attunement.
#### How to Attune to an Item
To attune:
- Spend **1 hour** focused on the item
- This can be done during a **short rest**
- You must meet any requirements listed (class, alignment, race)
Once attuned:
- You gain all the item’s benefits
#### Ending Attunement
You can end attunement by:
- Spending **1 hour** to break the bond
- Attuning to a fourth item (one attunement ends automatically)
- Dying
You can’t “swap” attunement instantly.
#### Attunement Limits (Why They Exist)
Attunement exists to:
- Prevent item stacking
- Keep characters balanced
- Encourage meaningful choices
- Make powerful items feel special
#### Spellcasting & Attunement
- Attunement is **not a spell**
- It cannot be rushed
- It cannot be interrupted by combat
- Anti-magic effects may suppress item benefits but do not break attunement
#### DM Rule of Thumb
> **If an item changes how a character plays, it probably requires attunement.**
#### Summary
> **You can only benefit from three powerful magic items at once.**
