![[Mirabar.png]] ### **The City of Mirabar** #### **The Jewel of the North** Nestled on the northern Sword Coast in the foothills of the Spine of the World, Mirabar is a fortress-city renowned for its wealth and unyielding defences. Known as the “Jewel of the North,” it is the richest mining city in the region, extracting a vast wealth of gems, gold, and mithril from the rugged mountains. Mirabar’s formidable walls, thick with heavy stone and reinforced by dwarven engineering, protect its prosperous mines and thriving population. #### **A City of Dual Heritage** Mirabar’s unique culture is rooted in the cooperation between two distinct communities: dwarves and humans. Dwarves were the first to settle in the area, drawn by its bountiful mines and mineral wealth. Over time, humans arrived, and instead of competing, the two groups struck a balance. The dwarves focus on mining and metalwork, while humans manage commerce, trade, and the defence of the city. To symbolize this harmony, the city’s seal depicts a hammer and a pickaxe crossed over a mountain, representing both peoples working side-by-side to ensure Mirabar’s prosperity. #### **Governance and the Council of Sparkling Stones** Mirabar’s government is overseen by the Council of Sparkling Stones, a body composed of representatives from both the dwarven and human communities. The council is led by the Marchion, traditionally a human, who serves as the city’s leader and primary representative to the outside world. However, the true power lies within the council, with each member having a say on matters of trade, security, and mining. The dwarves play a particularly influential role in the council, controlling the mines and safeguarding the knowledge of the intricate tunnel systems that extend deep beneath Mirabar. The human merchants, on the other hand, ensure that Mirabar’s riches flow to other parts of the Sword Coast, bringing wealth and trade partnerships that benefit the city as a whole. #### **The Mines of Mirabar** The mines beneath Mirabar are a sprawling network of tunnels, extending for miles under the mountains and descending deep into the earth. These tunnels, known as the Undercity, are the lifeblood of Mirabar’s wealth, yielding precious gemstones, gold, and rare metals. The dwarven miners work tirelessly in the mines, and each clan has its own well-guarded sector. Mirabar’s miners are fiercely protective of their claims, with each clan enforcing their own security within their tunnels. The city’s defences also include secret passages that allow the dwarves to swiftly mobilize against any threats that may arise, whether from the Underdark or from surface invaders. #### **Defences and the Axe of Mirabar** Mirabar’s military force, known as the **Axe of Mirabar**, is a disciplined and formidable army that draws soldiers from both human and dwarven ranks. Tasked with defending the city, the Axe of Mirabar is known for its elite training and unyielding loyalty. Equipped with armor forged from the very metals mined beneath the city, its soldiers are capable of withstanding harsh conditions and are skilled in combat tactics suited to mountainous terrain. The Axe of Mirabar also protects the mining caravans that travel to Luskan and Neverwinter, as well as the Mirar River trade routes, ensuring that Mirabar’s wealth continues to flow and that its people remain prosperous. #### **Relations with Neighbouring Lands** Mirabar is part of a delicate alliance with other northern cities and settlements, including Luskan, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep. Its wealth and resources make it a powerful political entity, though the city has historically maintained a degree of isolation, wary of external influences that could disrupt its stability. Due to its immense wealth and strategic location, Mirabar is often the target of raids and rival claims. Yet, through diplomacy, trade, and military strength, the city has managed to maintain its independence, playing a careful game of political manoeuvring to avoid entangling alliances that could threaten its autonomy. #### **The Undercity and Dangers Beneath** The Undercity, the network of tunnels beneath Mirabar, is not without its dangers. The depths occasionally give rise to threats from the Underdark, with strange creatures and drow raiders attempting to invade. To safeguard the city, the Council of Sparkling Stones has sanctioned an elite group of explorers and defenders known as the **Deep Wardens**. These brave souls venture into the darkest parts of the mines to fend off threats before they can reach the surface, ensuring the safety of both Mirabar’s resources and its citizens. Legends also speak of ancient ruins buried deep within the mines, remnants of forgotten civilizations that once inhabited the area. Some say these ruins hold powerful artifacts and arcane knowledge, while others warn of terrible curses and ancient evils lurking within. Rumours abound among Mirabar’s citizens of adventurers who disappeared in search of these treasures, their fates unknown. #### **A City of Prosperity and Resolve** Mirabar is not just a city of wealth; it is a symbol of endurance, unity, and resilience in the face of adversity. Its people, whether dwarf or human, are bound by a shared purpose, labouring together to protect their home and ensure their continued prosperity. With its unbreakable defences, disciplined soldiers, and vast resources, Mirabar stands as one of the great strongholds of the North a bastion of power and industry carved from stone and steel. --- ### **The Fall of Mirabar** #### **The Collapse of the Jewel of the North** For centuries, Mirabar stood resilient, its stone walls and prosperous mines symbolizing the alliance between humans and dwarves. Known as the “Jewel of the North,” this fortress-city had weathered countless sieges, remaining unscathed by raiders and rivals alike. But Mirabar was not prepared for the dark power that came for it a power older and colder than the mountain stone itself. The fall of Mirabar would be forever remembered as the work of **Zargathax, the Necromancer**. #### **Ominous Signs and Dark Whispers** Months before the fall, strange occurrences spread through the city. Miners reported hearing ghostly whispers deep in the tunnels, and shadows danced where no light should have been. The Deep Wardens, Mirabar’s elite defenders of the Undercity, encountered undead creatures emerging from forgotten passageways, seemingly aimless but growing in numbers. Rumors began to spread of a dark figure who had taken an interest in Mirabar’s wealth and secrets. The Council of Sparkling Stones brushed aside these warnings, seeing them as mere superstitions. However, Captain **Eldrin Steelheart** of the Axe of Mirabar sensed something dire. He sent scouts to investigate, but none returned. Unbeknownst to the council, Zargathax was already at work, preparing a spell to consume Mirabar and twist it to his own ends. #### **The Necromancer’s Siege** The attack began during the darkest night of the year. While a snowstorm raged on the surface, obscuring the city from view, Zargathax’s forces surged from the Undercity. Hordes of undead skeletons, zombies, and spirits bound to Zargathax’s will rose from the mines, overwhelming the Deep Wardens and flooding into Mirabar’s lower levels. Zargathax himself emerged from the darkness, a robed figure with eyes glowing like coals and a skeletal grin that seemed to mock life itself. With a staff of charred bone and a whispered incantation, he unleashed a dark miasma upon the city. The necromantic fog choked the breath from Mirabar’s defenders, transforming fallen soldiers into new ranks for his undead army. #### **A Battle on Two Fronts** Desperate to defend their home, the Axe of Mirabar split their forces to combat the undead on two fronts. In the Undercity, Captain Steelheart led a counterattack to seal off the lower tunnels, hoping to stem the tide. But Zargathax anticipated every move. His magic, dark and ancient, snaked through the passageways, reanimating dwarves and humans alike who had fallen in the fight, forcing them to turn against their own. Above ground, the council members convened for a final stand. As the undead breached the city’s gates, Zargathax appeared before them, relishing their despair. He proclaimed that Mirabar’s wealth would serve his dark purposes and that the souls of its people would fuel his ascension to true Lichdom. The council, led by Marchion **Marek Stoneshield**, made a desperate plea for unity, ordering the citizens to evacuate while they fortified their last defences. #### **The Marchion’s Sacrifice** --- In a desperate bid to buy his people time to escape, **Marek Stoneshield** crafted a final, sacrificial plan. Understanding Zargathax's insatiable thirst for power, he baited the necromancer into a trap within the **Great Hall**, where Mirabar’s most precious relics and artifacts were kept. Stoneshield and his loyal council lured Zargathax there, hoping to ignite the city’s vast alchemical stores in a fiery explosion powerful enough to consume even the darkest magic. As Zargathax entered the Great Hall, Stoneshield and his council launched a fierce attack, their weapons and spells clashing against the necromancer’s powerful wards. The hall shook with arcane energies as they fought, but Zargathax’s dark magic proved overwhelming. With a wave of his skeletal hand, he shattered Stoneshield’s defences. As he strode toward the fallen Marchion, Stoneshield gave a final, desperate signal, igniting the alchemical stores in a brilliant explosion that consumed the room in an inferno. But Zargathax’s hunger for power transformed the very flames meant to destroy him. At the heart of the blast, as the inferno raged, he called upon his necromantic magic, drawing upon the souls of Mirabar’s slain defenders. The dark energies twisted and reshaped him until his mortal form shattered, and he emerged, reborn a colossal **Dark Dragon**, wreathed in shadow and flame, his scales black as obsidian and eyes gleaming with unholy fire. Mirabar’s final leaders perished in the blast, but their sacrifice was overshadowed by the horror unleashed in its wake. Zargathax, now a creature of darkness and wrath, absorbed the essence of the fallen city itself, binding it to his soul. Scorched yet triumphant, he left Mirabar a ruin, its echoes haunted by the screams of the departed and guarded by the monstrous shadow of the dragon that claimed it. --- #### **The Aftermath** By dawn, Mirabar lay in ruin. Its people scattered, its walls reduced to rubble, and its mines now a labyrinth of haunted echoes and restless dead. Survivors fled to nearby cities, bringing tales of the necromancer’s wrath. Luskan, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep sent scouts, confirming that Mirabar was now a city of the dead, ruled by Zargathax’s lingering curse. ---
