Mira remembers being given away. Her village was starving, and when the old woman came from the marsh offering food in exchange for “a kindness,” Mira’s parents made a choice they could never undo.
She was taken to the hag’s cottage and raised among strange whispers, old magic, and things no child should have seen. The hag made her gather herbs in the swamp, read shapes in smoke, and sit quietly while dark bargains were made around her. Mira learned early that silence kept her safe.
She became observant, patient, and far older in spirit than a child should be. She watched everything. Remembered everything. And though she rarely speaks of the hag, she still seems to hear things others do not. When Sordia Vignti freed her, Mira did not cry or run into their arms. She simply asked, very quietly, “Are you taking the others too?”
Now she stays close to the younger children, often watching over them without being asked. She still startles at raised voices, still stares too long into firelight. But for the first time in years, Mira is beginning to believe the future might hold something other than fear.
