#### **Backstory:**
> [!abstract] **GUILD ARCHIVE • PERSONAL HISTORY**
> Graxen Varrow is the third - and youngest - son of Barovia's malevolent *Blood Siren*, Velaria Varrow - hailing from Voldaris, a kingdom deep below the waves in the plane of Ravenloft.
>
Graxen has served as *[[The Siren's Voice]]* for many years, acting as her envoy to the surface. Alongside his older brother, Skaull - a fearsome warrior known as the Bloodhound, who serves as *The Siren’s Will*, or enforcer - Graxen has played an important role in his mother’s continuing plans.
>
Graxen, however, was not the first *Siren’s Voice*. The title had been previously bestowed upon his older brother, Thalion. Graxen adored this brother. Even Skaull, notoriously unaffectionate, held Thalion in high regard - respectful of his abilities.
The middle child, Thalion often exerted himself to prove his worth to their mother. His eagerness, rooted in a deep seated longing for approval, would ultimately be his undoing.
>
Dispatched by the *Blood Siren* to parlay with Strahd, Thalion was tasked with brokering more favourable terms in the uneasy arrangement between the courts above and below the Barovian waves. Graxen accompanied his brother - in the hope he might learn from observing the exchange.
Strahd was unwavering, steadfast in the pre-existing circumstance - uninterested and dismissive of Thalion’s request for change. Emboldened by his craving for their mother's approval, Thalion pushed harder - his tone shifting from a gentle appeal to a firm demand. He challenged Strahd, refusing to leave his domain without a compromise. As his patience wore thin, Strahd’s temper flared. Thalion’s defiance struck the Count as a transgressive insult, causing the full measure of his ire to rush forth.
>
Graxen hurled himself between the two in a feeble attempt to protect his brother, but the deed had been done. Amused, Strahd ordered the young dhampir to leave his sight - commanding him to return to his mother with Thalion’s corpse in tow, an emphatic statement to reassert the hierarchy in Barovia.
Shortly thereafter, the Siren appointed Graxen in Thalion’s stead - calling upon him to take up the mantle as her *Voice*. As his first task, he was redeployed to Castle Ravenloft - carrying with him his mother’s sincerest apologies for her previous envoy’s belligerence. Made to smile politely and grovel before the man who had murdered his brother in front of him, Graxen would come to think of this moment as the worst in his life.
>
More recently, the balance of power in Barovia has experienced an unprecedented shift. Graxen has found himself more and more troubled by the quickening machinations of his mother's schemes. Rumours abound of Strahd’s demise, with songs and tales aplenty praising the band of intrepid adventurers responsible. The Siren has sensed blood in the water, her determination and resolve growing tenfold.
Graxen was dispatched to find Sordia Vignti - with a message of warning. The *Blood Siren* has laid claim to all of Ravenloft, and those that would oppose her are to stand aside or face her wrath.
>
Deeply troubled by the growing cruelty and malice demonstrated by his mother in her campaign to invade the surface world, Graxen instead beseeched Sordia Vignti to join him in opposing her - defecting to join the adventurers in the process.

#### After the Jump
![[Graxen.Nissa.png]]
For Graxen, the year was not defined by shadows or wars, but by building a life worth protecting. Where others carried guilt or sought redemption, he turned his strength toward shaping something lasting—something his enemies could never take away.
**Discipline and Steel**
The days were filled with training. Graxen pushed himself harder than ever before, honing his swordplay, refining his tactics, and testing his body until muscle burned and calluses thickened. He was determined to be ready for whatever lay ahead, to ensure that no blow would find him unprepared. Yet his training was never just for himself—his example lit a fire in the younger generation. He trained the children who had lost parents in the wars, teaching them discipline, strength, and resilience. To them, he was not just a warrior, but a protector and mentor.
**Love in the Quiet**
In the spaces between battles and drills, Graxen found something far more precious: love. His bond with Nissa grew into a romance bright enough to soften even the hardest days. Laughter filled the quiet corners of their home, and warmth replaced loneliness. When Nissa’s hand found his, the weight of his past seemed lighter, as though he had finally found a place where he belonged.
**The Child of Hope**
Their love bore fruit—a child born into a world still healing. The baby’s cries, small and fierce, seemed to Graxen like a declaration that life would endure despite all ruin. Holding the infant in his arms, Graxen felt a kind of strength no training could ever grant him. He had fought for kingdoms, for honour, for vengeance—but now he fought for his family, for the future of this child who bore both Nissa’s smile and his determination.
**Aiding the Displaced**
Even as he built his own life, Graxen did not forget those who had lost theirs. He aided refugees, ensuring they found shelter and work. With Derek, he offered guidance and muscle to those struggling to rebuild. Every stone lifted, every wall raised, every hand offered was a quiet strike against despair.
**A Home of His Own**
By year’s end, Graxen and Nissa stood at the threshold of a home built with their own hands. Timber walls, a hearth that burned warmly, and a garden where laughter could echo—a place of safety amidst uncertainty. Within it, Graxen finally knew peace, if only for a moment.
**The Hearthfire’s Legacy**
In that year, Graxen grew not only as a warrior but as a man. His sword was sharper, his body stronger—but more importantly, his heart was fuller. He had built more than a house; he had built a home. He had sown seeds of hope in children, in refugees, in his own family.
And when the dark returned—as it always did—Graxen would meet it not as a lone fighter, but as a father, a lover, and a shield for all who gathered around his hearth.
